This study was designed to investigate the effects of elastic band exercise using proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) and central nervous system (CNS) -stimulating exercise on functional fitness and electromyograph (EMG) in hemiplegic stroke patients. Fourteen hemiplegic stroke patients were divided into elastic band exercise using PNF group (PNF group; n=7) and CNS-stimulating exercise group (CNS group; n=7). Subjects in PNF group and CNS group performed elastic band exercise and CNS-stimulating exercise, respectively, for 30 min/session, five times/wk, for four weeks. Functional fitness and EMG were measured and compared between groups and between pre- and post-test. Main results of the present study were as follows: 1) Knee flexion, arm curl, and sit-and-reach increased significantly in PNF group and CNS group. Knee extension, standing up and sitting down a chair, and functional reach increased significantly in PNF group, whereas 2.44m up and go improved significantly in CNS group. 2) All variables regarding EMG increased significantly in PNF group and CNS group, and the increment rate was higher in PNF group than CNS group. It was concluded that elastic band exercise using PNF would be more beneficial to improve muscular strength, muscular endurance, static balance, and strength of vastus medialis than CNS-stimulating exercise. Therefore, elastic band exercise using PNF could be very effective alternative method to treat hemiplegic stroke patients.
