Design has been increasingly recognized as a strategic management tool for coping with the ever-intensifying competition in internet business. Together with the strategic use of internet service design, this research aims to identify designers’ roles and contributions in new internet service strategy formulation and implementation. The HyundaiCard Website 3.0, which was renewed by successful partnerships with two design consulting firms (IDEO and ACG), was investigated. Through the analysis of the case study results, this study proposed a model for a triangular client-design consultant partnership that explains the following distinctive roles of designers and clients in the strategy-led internet service website development process: (1) IDEO, which conducted an inspirational user research for creating innovative financial experiences as a strategy formulator; (2) ACG, which practically implemented the strategy by visualizing credit card information and service tasks in a more emotional way as a strategy implementer; and (3) HyundaiCard, which played a versatile/flexible role in effectively mediating and harmonizing the design practices of these two design firms as a strategy evaluator or strategy communicator. Based on evidence from the case studies, this research supports the notion that the design activities in internet business have expanded from the web design level to the strategic management level.
