Freedom and equality have a symmetrical relation in historical origins as well as conceptual definitions, and they presuppose each other. But as freedom is connected to ideal of liberalism and so did equality to ideal of marxism, freedom and equality were mutually exclusive and conflictive, finally asymmetrical each other. However this asymmetry is not valid theoretically and realistically, because equality is impossible in the constraints on freedom, and freedom is impossible under the condition in which equality is not realized.
Historically, the demand for freedom is larger than equality in the period of the free market, liberalists who put up freedom as the highest value were produced on a large scale. And people demanded a marxist equality by reason of the harmful consequences of the free market. But the liberal camp accepted the demand of equality as the operating system's side effects, not the limitations of the system itself. In contrast, the marxist camp always reduced freedom to problem of the human rights which fight against capitalist ownership. To correct these shortcomings, we should set up freedom and equality which have the same value in connotation and extension. Moreover the symmetry between freedom and equality must be realized in concrete reality.
No matter what position on freedom or equality, namely in liberal equality or egalitarian liberty, should establish such a common term as justice or egqliberete. In addition, the common term must include the symmetry of value which freedom and equality have, must not calculate the ratio or functional relation between freedom and equality. Because To restore the symmetry between freedom and equality distorted by liberalism and marxism ideologically or functionally, holds a essential position in planning for good human life.

자유와 평등은 역사적 기원에서뿐만 아니라 개념적 규정에서도 대칭성을 가지며 서로를 전제한다. 하지만 자유가 자유주의의 이념으로, 평등이 마르크스주의의 이념으로 이데올로기적으로 연결되게 되면서 자유와 평등은 서로를 배제하고 대립하는 비대칭성을 띠게 되었다. 그러나 이러한 비대칭성은 이론적으로나 현실적으로 타당하지 않다. 왜냐하면 자유에 대한 제약 속에서 평등은 불가능하며 동시에 평등이 실현되지 않는 자유도 불가능하기 때문이다.
역사적으로 자유에 대한 수요가 평등보다 더 컸던 자유경쟁시장의 시대에 자유를 최고의 가치로 내세우는 자유주의자가 양산되었고, 동시에 자유경쟁시장의 폐해는 마르크스주의적 평등에 대한 급격한 수요를 발생시켰다. 그런데 자유주의 진영은 평등의 요구를 자유주의 체제 자체가 지닌 한계가 아니라 체제 운영의 부작용으로 보았다. 반면에 마르크스주의 진영은 자유를 언제나 자본주의적 소유권에 대항하는 권리의 문제로 환원하고 있었다. 이런 한계를 보완하기 위해서는 자유와 평등을 내포와 외연에서 동일한 가치로 설정하고, 그 대칭성을 구체적 현실에서 실현해야 한다.
자유와 평등을 둘러싼 입장이 자유주의적 평등이든 평등주의적 자유든 간에 두 가지를 모두 살려내는 정의(justice)나 평등적 자유(egqliberete)와 같은 공통항을 마련해야 한다. 또한 그 공통항은 자유와 평등 사이의 비율이나 역학관계를 따지는 함수가 아니라 가치의 대칭성을 반드시 포함하는 것이어야 한다. 자유주의와 마르크스주의에 의해 이데올로기적으로 또는 기능적으로 왜곡된 자유와 평등의 대칭성을 복구하는 일은 인간다운 삶을 위한 기획에서 핵심적인 지위를 차지하는 것이기 때문이다.
