Examined in this article, is essentially how the Goguryeo dynasty faced the grand task of ‘maintaining the feudal elements in its local order,’ and also the mission of ‘introducing a new fashion of ruling or governance to the inside’ at the same time. Also examined is how the dynasty achieved it, by having the royal throne shift between several power factions.
Relevant data that concerns the aforementioned ‘shift in power,’ data which remains inside the ‘Dong’i-jeon’ chapter of the historical text『Samguk-ji(The Three Dynasties’ History)』, are examined here especially in terms of the records’ description of the ‘present’ and ‘past.’ The ‘Dong’i-jeon’ chapter of『Samguk-ji』contains a vast range of information that would have been accumulated up until the 3rd century, and also includes invaluable historical knowledge which were secured at the time of its own publication. The main question is, exactly what ‘time period’ the various expressions shown in the text, such as ‘The time of the Han dynasty(漢時),’ ‘Originally(本),’ ‘Now(今),’ ‘Later(後),’ would be referring to. Analysis shows that various issues which are said to have occurred in the ‘Han times,’ were related to the time point of ‘originally,’ when the Yeon’no-bu faction was seizing the royal throne. Examination also shows that the time point of ‘later,’ which could be described as the time of the “Chaek’gu-ru” installation, was actually the time when the relationship between the Hyeondo-gun Commandery and the Goguryeo government considerably changed, while the power struggles over the throne inside Goguryeo were heating up.
Also examined here is how the Yeon’no-bu faction ruled the dynasty before it was replaced by another faction, in terms of its relationship with China. Yeon’no-bu was literally in charge of the whole country, and it also established a diplomatic relationship with the Chinese Han dynasty by receiving official attires and symbolic materials from China through the Hyeondo-gun commandery which were later put under management of the Goguryeo prefect. This kind of relationship was a stronger one compared to the one that Han used against Gojoseon(“We’shin-je”), yet the idea itself was the same.
In the meantime, due to the foundation of a new Chinese dynasty Shin(新), the Chinese government’s policy toward the “Dong’i” race was altered, and Shin’s king Wang Mang forcibly mobilized the Goguryeo troops. The Guryeo prefect Chu who was killed in the incident was not the same person with King Yu’ri-wang, so we can see that the time of this incident marked the very ending of the Yeon’no-bu faction’s ruling of Goguryeo. Two years after, which was the 33rd year of king Yu’ri-wang’s reign, there appears a line in records which say, “defeat the ’Yangmaek(two Maek tribes)’ and destroy the country, and then march forward to attack Han dynasty’s Goguryeo-hyeon and secure it.” It seems like a line which was inserted in the records by the Gye’ru-bu faction which newly came to rule Goguryeo.
