The aim of this study is to examine the structuralization process of the Korean Democratic Party, in terms of characteristics displayed by groups that participated in the formation of the party, and also in terms of the party’s overall structure, which were in the end, all closely connected to the situation of the Nationalist movement that continued during the Japanese colonial period. This study also aims to reveal how the Korean political factions, with a long history of Nationalist movements, influenced the early occupation policy of the United States Army Military Government in Korea(USAMGIK), by examining no other than the Korea Democratic Party faction.
The Korea Democratic Party, was a party created in 1945 by the Dong-A Ilbo Newspaper faction and the political factions from the Honam region, and the party was also an alliance between two major Christian forces that expanded their influence during the Japanese colonial period, one being the Heungsa-dan, Su’yang Dong’wu-hwe and the Northwestern regional political group, and the other being the Dongji-hwe, Heung’up Gurak-bu and the Giho regional political group. Also, the party was joined by many Right-wing Socialists who shared an ideology and agenda different from Communism.
The leadership of the Korea Democratic Party established a strong cooperative relationship with the USAMGIK. Many of the Korea Democratic Party personnel sought and secured positions inside the USAMGIK, and the Military Governor Advisory Council especially played a large role in all that. The Korea Democratic Party was aiming to suppress the Communist factions and take charge of the task of constructing a new country, while the USAMGIK was intending to establish a democratic country which would effectively facilitate the United States’ plans for East Asia. Therefore, the early occupation policy of the USAMGIK was supported by both sides.
