The aim of this study is to develop a hierarchy of the objective and content criteria of the Korean History Competence Examination(KHCE). The major contents of the study consist of four parts. First, various research findings focusing on the taxonomy of educational objectives and history educational goals were systematically discussed in order to develop a hierarchy of the objective criteria of KHCE. Second, research and arguments focusing on the sequence and hierarchy of the historical content knowledge were closely reviewed for elaborating a hierarchy of the content criteria of KHCE. Third, history curriculum at elementary through high school and history subject at university level, mainly focusing on the late Joson Dynasty, were reviewed in order to establish the evaluation scope and the content hierarchy. Finally the issue of validity on the hierarchy of the objective criteria of KHCE were discussed with three findings mentioned above. This study concludes that the hierarchy of the objective and content criteria developed in the study would be an affective tool to verify the validity of the test items in KHCE. The hierarchy suggested in the study must be important in considering that the content to evaluate and the objectives to reach in KHCE should be constructed systematically in accordance with the level of applicants.
