Yuha Hong Se-Tae was a representing poet of the Yeohang literary group (閭巷文人) who left more than 2,000 poems and compilated “Haedongyuju (『海東遺珠』)”. His poems are evaluated as expressing sincerely about conflicts and psychological wandering in one?s life. This is the reason why his poems are paid attention in this paper.
Deprivation(缺乏) was especially exposed in his poems. The deprivation in his poem was derived from his experiences of failure to get high social status and poverty through his whole life, and the deaths of eight sons and two daughters as well as two brothers before he died.
Deprivation is objectively exists, but it can be mitigated or worsened by comparing with one?s own expectation and past circumstances, or the situation of other people. Hong Se-Tae often expressed his own deprivation as a sense of inability and hostility. Sense of inability came from his attitude of regret rather than trying to overcome. His desire to succeed in life was great and failure to succeed made such sense of inability even worse. Hostility was, in part, an expression of his dissatisfaction where he thought that his failure to get higher position was due to the restriction of social status change. However, more important aspect of hostility might come from the addition of negative feeling to the deprivation caused by personal matter such as deaths of relatives and severe poverty. Such expression was a reflection of his attitude in writing poems where he pursued the world as it existed rather than it should exist. The realistic and psychological deprivation that was inevitable to Hong Se-Tae during his life was exposed completely in his poems, and the deprivation made his poems more superb.
