Interests among churches and individuals of the Reformed Church tradition are increasing for contemplative prayer which used to be taken by them as the legacy of Catholicism. Historically, however, the tradition of contemplative prayer had been commonly shared by all the Christian traditions, moreover the prayer had been cherished and practiced by both reformists and their descendants. Despite historical facts, Protestant churches in Korea had remained unfamiliar and distant to the tradition of contemplative prayer. The author believes it to be spiritually beneficial that individual Christians and Korean Reformed churches begin to discover and practice the rich and diverse forms of Christian prayer as their interest in Christian spirituality is on the rise. Particularly paying attention to the tradition of contemplative prayer and reinterpreting it from the perspective of the Reformed Church can be critical move to restore the gold mine of prayer.
One misunderstanding or prejudice that people often suffer from in regards to contemplative prayer is that either they think of it as a form of prayer that is separate from everyday life or to undervalue other forms of prayer in favor of it. However, contemplation is nothing more than being awakened to the truth that “we breath, move, and live within God” and ‘opening ourselves to the presence of God.’ Contemplative prayer is a practice and discipline that helps Christians to be more sensitive to the presence of God and helps them become more comfortable opening themselves to God’s love. It is in this sense that contemplative prayer goes beyond a particular form of prayer and becomes a way of ‘being with God here and now’ including not only the moment of praying but also all the hours standing in front of God and within God. Such an understanding of contemplative prayer is in line with the tradition of Reformed spirituality which has sought to overcome the separation between the sacred and the secular, action and prayer, and life and worship, in which the medieval Catholicism was stuck.
