The purpose of this study was to find the effects of aquatic exercise program on leg muscle function and T-score as well as depression in elderly women with knee osteoarthritis. Subjects of this study were participated in thirty elderly women with knee osteoarthritis on S tower silver town. The subjects were confined to aquatic exercise group (AEG, N=15), and non exercise group (CON, N=15). Exercise group has been trained for 24 weeks in pool. The exercise program was made up of warm-up (10min), work-out (40min), and cool-down (10min). The results were as follows: 1) The muscle functions were significantly different to most variable. Especially, left extensor muscle strength of AEG was significantly improved after 24 weeks aquatic exercise on 60°/sec. Right flexor and extensor as well as left extensor muscle strength of AEG was significantly improved after 24 weeks aquatic exercise on 180°/sec. Left extensor muscle strength of AEG was significantly improved after 24 weeks aquatic exercise on 240°/sec. 2) T-score was significantly different in both groups (p<.001). 3) Depression scale was significantly different in both groups (p<.001). This suggested that aquatic exercise were improved on muscle function and T-score of leg as well as depression in elderly women with knee osteoarthritis. From what has been discussed above, aquatic exercise must be necessary to knee osteoarthritic patients or elderly and it’s very effective on improving leg muscle function and T-score as well as depression. Also, quality of life will be improved by decreased depression.
