Van der Leeuw’s Sacred and Profane Beauty: the Holy in Art is the pioneering masterpiece of the Theological Aesthetics. I will investigate this book for the renewal of the Korean theology and missions. I want to find out how might we construct the relationship between the holy and the beautiful, in order that the reader(theological students, local church pastors, and missionaries) may understand independence and interdependence between the holy and the beautiful.
In this unique and highly significant book van der Leeuw reveals his thesis: the reunification of the holy and the beauty. His impassioned and brilliant investigation of the relationship between the holy and the beautiful is founded upon the conviction that for too long the religious have failed to seriously contemplate the beautiful, associating it as they do with the kingdom of sensuality and impermanence. In truth, as van der Leeuw again and again affirms, the holy has never been absent from the arts, and the arts have never been unresponsive to the holy.
The book is so organized that the different arts are treated one after another in six parts: the dance, drama, beautiful words, the pictorial arts, architecture, and music. Van der Leeuw describes each of the arts in its original unity with the religious and then analyzes its historical disjunction and alienation. After a penetrating investigation of the structural elements within the arts which illuminates a crucial dimension of the religious experience, he points toward the reemergence of an appropriate theological aesthetics on which a reunification of the arts could be founded. The last part is devoted to a general theological aesthetics.
In this research I have undertaken to show that Korean church and mission could be renewed, when they understand the essential unity of the holy and the arts(or beautiful) and when they discover paths and boundaries for reaching the unity of the holy and the beautiful. God speaks not just through truth and goodness, but also through beauty.
If Korean church could reach to the harmony ‘faith seeking knowledge’(fides quaerens intellectum) and ‘faith seeking beauty’(fides quaerens pulchrum), then she can find freshly ‘the other’ and will find the reason to love ‘the other’. In that case she will be the salt and light in/for the world.
