Kim, Jinwung. 2008. A Comparative Analysis of Recent South Korean Perceptions of the United States. Wonkwang Journal of Humanities 9(1), 73-100. This study intends to analyze recent South Korean perceptions of the United States in a comparative context. Main observations can be summed up as follows. First, South Korean perceptions of the United States and North Korea have been closely related to each other and have tended to be diametrically opposed. Second, Korean perceptions of the United States reveal a vast gap between the views and values of the older Korean generation and those of the postwar generation. While the older generation assumes a relatively friendly attitude toward the United States, the postwar generation is assertive, nationalistic, and therefore is critical of the superpower. Third, compared with those of China and world views of America, South Korean perceptions of the United States have certainly deteriorated. It would be unsafe to assume that deteriorated South Korean image of the United States is only a passing phenomenon. Both Korea and the United States need to recognize that the bilateral relationship has been more complex than ever before. (Kyungpook National University)
