This paper aims to elucidate three (or four) things on the modern nation. First, I want to clarify the relationship between the Korean words which are used as the competitive terms for the concept of nation, namely Minjok and Kukmin. To this end, I will show that the relevant Korean term for the nation is Kukmin, and Minjok is for the Ethnie (as used by Anthony D. Smith) after reviewing of recent literatures on nation and nationalism. Second, in my thought, one of the reasons for the confusion of Minjok and Kukmin is that the modern nation is usually thought in terms of law so that its political ontological features are not fully recognized. So, I try to explain the modern nation as a universal contradictory complex. Third, if we understand the modern nation like it, nationalism as an organic ideology of the nation should be translated as Kukminjuyi rather than Minjokjuyi. As Michael Billig brilliantly shows, nationalism does not mean simply the extremist ideology or some old-fashioned phenomena which are peculiar for the third world nations. Rather, it also includes every-day, endemic things like sporting events, national songs, patriotic clubs, the use of implied togetherness in the national press etc. But if we understand nationalism as Minjokjuyi, the banal nationalism would be remained as the non-ideological, normal phenomena. I think, therefore, the term Kukminjuyi should be preferred in order to examine and challenge the banal nationalism. Finally, in conclusion, I will introduce the concept of ‘community of fate’ (Hermann van Gunsteren/Etienne Balibar) to suggest the alternative imagined community for the nation.
