In the case of Korea, urbanization, which started since the Korean War, has increased the number of urban residents, which in turn caused a serious housing problem. Accordingly, the Korea Land and Housing Corporation has attempted to resolve the housing shortage problem partially, by constructing a series of small-scale modern urban housing complexes. Based on such planned housing complexes, private construction companies started to build housing, resulting in the expansion of residential areas. Since then, due to lack of the surrounding convenience facilities appropriate for social changes, as well as due to the indiscriminate development of urban areas, the housing environment has been gradually deteriorated, and Seoul city tried to solve this problem through several redevelopment projects. However, such projects resulted in destructing residents’ familiar living environment and discontinuing urban history. This study was conducted to investigate and analyze the physical characteristics of the national housing development complex, particularly focusing on Jangwi-dong, which was one of the several urban housing areas that were being developed under the supervision of the Korea Land and Housing Corporation. This study also investigates the characteristics of architectural change in the urban housing complexes that have been formed since the 1960s. The findings of this study could be used as a basis for suggesting housing types that be applicable to the existing urban housing areas.
