Choi, Hansook. 2011. Native speakers and Korean learners: Analyzing Individual Variation. Korean Journal of English Language and Linguistics 11-3, 751-771. This study observes patterns of prosodic transfer in normative speakers' second language production and investigates factors correlated with the different degrees of transfer as fluency indices. Temporal resolution in words and syllables is analyzed in English sentences read by 20 native English speakers and 40 Korean learners of English. The dissimilar temporal resolution in English speech by individual Korean learners is further analyzed in relation to diverse speech-external factors such as age, motivation, length of English study and length of residence in English-speaking countries. The results show that prosodic transfer is found in both word duration and syllable duration measurements. Attenuated durational distinction between the prominent and nonprominent syllables by nonnative speakers is one key difference from the native speakers. Difference in the temporal resolution is, however, most significant between the high school students and the native speakers. A correlation between the temporal resolution in word duration and syllable duration is found in the nonnative speakers' English speech, suggesting the interactive acquisition of prosodic features. Certain speech external factors such as age, length of English study or length of residence in English-speaking countries show a partial correlation with temporal resolution, although only the effect from length of English study is statistically supported significant. All self-evaluations on English proficiency do not explain the individual fluency in temporal resolution in the current study.
