The ROK-US alliance and the US-Japan alliance are in the process of synchronization in the wake of the US-led RMA efforts and the alliance transformation. Against this backdrop with increased salience in the global financial difficulties, it is required for the alliances to expand their role for regional and global security. In accordance with the strategic rationale guided by the US regarding the US-Japan-Korea security cooperation, the ROK and Japan are very likely to take part in the networked alliance. Even after the peace on the Peninsula, the ROK-US alliance will survive the transitional process in an effort to maintain new balance of power in Northeast Asia and also as means to offset Korea’s growing economic dependence on China. Since the ROK-China trade and investment interests are vital to the Korean economy, Seoul should maximize its strategic value with diplomatic balance between the US and China. A new Korean national strategy will lie in developing of the ROK-US alliance and in reinforcing the US-Japan-Korea security cooperation. The trilateral security cooperation is expected to incorporate a dialogue with NATO, and eventually to open security cooperation with Russia and China in the long-term perspective. Seoul further needs to develop sophisticated diplomatic stance to accommodate Beijing’ concerns by carefully crafted political-military measures with respect to its alliance with the U.S. Those efforts should include new China policy doctrines and defensive military postures to avoid unwanted security dilemma in fielding the networked alliance system.
