Gangneung Danoje Festival is the symbol of traditional cultural art of Gangneung region and is fragrance of people of this region’s history and life. Gangneung Danoje Festival is a festival serving God of the Daekwanloung, Guksa Tutelary Deity and Guksa Female Tutelary Deity. It unifies God and Human. For this Gangneung Danoje Festival’s importance of traditional festival was approved and finally was applicated for ‘Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity’ in Nov, 11,2005. It became a festival of the world and of which mankind have to conserve. For this reason, understanding of the festival and research and development of Dano craftworks apearing in the Gangneung Danoje Festival is necessary.
This research’s purpose is to help understanding Gangneung Danoje Festival and to find way to develop Dano craftworks and Dano cultural goods by examine types, meaning, and symbols of craftworks apearing in Dano as a seasonal customs, especially Gangneung Danoje Festival. In this research, there are two parts examining Dano’s craftworks. First is the fan of Dano(端午扇), the garb of Dano(端午粧), and the amulet of Dano(端午符籍) in Dano as a seasonal customs, and second is visual formative arts and craftworks in Gangneung Danoje Festival. We will examine Sinmok, Whagae, Paints in the shrine of Guksa Tutelary Deiry and Guksa Female Tutelary Deity, masks-Yangban performer, New bride, Sisiddakddagi, Jangjamari of the Gwanno Mask Drama, decorations of Gooddang and stage properties of Good, and finally the dishes used in relegious ceremonies of Dano as the Gangneung Danoje Festival’s religious symbols.
By arranging many craftworks in Danoje, we should preserve the original form of them and furthermore, develop mordern type of Dano craftworks containing the festival’s image to advertise Gangneung Danoje Festival, contribute in vigor of district economy, and to make Gangneung Danoje Festivla a festival of the world.

강릉단오제는 강릉지역 전통문화예술의 상징이며 이 지역 주민들의 역사와 삶의 향기이다. 대관령의 산신께 제사하고 국사성황신과 국사여성황신을 모시고 신과 인간이 하나 되는 전통의 축제가 바로 강릉단오제이다. 이러한 강릉단오제는 전통축제의 중요성이 인정되어 마침내 2005년 11월 25일 유네스코 세계무형유산 걸작으로 선정되었고 이를 계기로 세계인의 축제이자 인류가 공동으로 지켜야 할 축제가 되었다. 이와 더불어 강릉단오제라는 축제를 이해하고 단오문화를 알리기 위하여 강릉단오제 속에 등장하는 단오공예품에 대한 연구와 개발이 필요하다. 따라서 본 연구는 세시풍속 단오 때와 특히 강릉 단오제에서 등장하는 공예품에 대해서 그 종류와 의미 상징 등을 알아봄으로써 강릉단오제의 이해를 돕고 이를 통해 현재 필요한 우수한 단오공예품 및 단오문화상품을 개발의 방향을 모색하는데 연구의 목적이 있겠다.
연구내용에서는 크게 두 가지로 나누어 단오 공예품들을 살펴본다.
첫 번째 세시풍속으로의 단오에서는 단오선, 단오빔, 단오부적을 다루었고, 두 번째는 강릉단오제 때 등장하는 시각적인 조형예술품 들과 공예품이라 부를 수 있는 것들을 다룬다. 강릉단오제의 신앙적 상징물로서 신목과 화개, 대관령국사서낭당과 대관령국사여서낭당에 모셔진 그림, 관노가면극에서의 탈-양반광대, 소매각시, 시시딱딱이, 장자마리, 다음으로는 굿당의 장식물과 굿연행 소도구, 마지막으로 단오제례에서의 각종제기에 대해서 그 형태, 의미, 상징성 등을 중점으로 살펴본다. 이렇게 단오제에 등장되는 각종 공예품들을 정리해 봄으로써 그 원형을 보존하고 나아가 이를 바탕으로 단오축제 이미지를 내포한 현대적 감각의 단오공예품 및 기념품을 개발하여, 강릉단오제를 홍보하고 지역 경제 활성화에 기여하며, 또한 강릉단오제를 세계적 축제로 자리매김하여야 할 것이다.
