This study set out to review the disputed points and problems of “Anjodeunggwandaemyo,” which has raised the fiercest controversy in the research on the memorial stone of King Muryeong, and propose new ways to solve the problems. The study introduced the following approaches to attempt new interpretations: first, “Anjodeunggwandaemyo,” which has been interpreted as one sentence, was divided into “Anjo” and “Deunggwandamyo.” Being an antithesis of “Gaejang” of the queen, “Anjo” was interpreted as “holding a funeral service at a temporary location.” Secondly, “Deunggwandamyo” was further divided into “Deung/Gwangdamyo.” Then “Deung” and “Gwan” were looked up in a dictionary along with “Anjo” for their examples. The investigator also tried to estimate the elusive meanings of “Deunggwan” by using archeological data. Following those approaches, it was interpreted that “Deung” would mean “covering the lid right after the body was placed in a coffin” as an adverb or “placing the body on the highest Daemyo” as a verb embellished by “Gwan.” Judging from the location and ceiling style of the tomb of King Muryeong, it was estimated that the interpretation, “placing the body on the highest Daemyo,” would possible. Finally, the investigator attempted to interpret the meanings of “Daemyo” in more detail. The Chinese characters used along with “Daemyo” all mean a transfer from the original place to another, which is made clearer by a Chinese character “Hwan” in the memorial stone of the tomb of King Muryeong. “Hwan” means “returning to the original place.” When it is added to “Daemyo,” the resulting “Hwandaemyo” might mean “returning to the original place, Daemyo.” Thus the old interpretation, “He was well placed in the Daemyo (on August 12 of Eulsa Year),” can be replaced by a new interpretation, “He was temporarily placed (in the royal palace) (until August 12 of Eulsa Year) (and) later transferred to the highest Daemyo.”
