The peddlers who are on the last end of distribution system, continue to exist from ancient era to today. But with the premodern economic structure transferred capitalistic structure, the status of peddlers has changed seriously. In the period of Yi~Dinasty， urban peddlers were related with the other econimic subject, producers, wholesale dealers, consumers, and so on. However, in modern period urban peddlers were only the last salers.
The fundermental changes on the status and role of urban peddlers have occured after the Gabo(1894) reform. The abolition of status system, formation of urban standing market and the government"s commercial policy have influenced the changes of the status and image of urban peddlers. After the Russo ? Japanese war, urban standing markets and traffic organs were increased, and the places around railroad station have emerged new commercial center in Seoul. Accordingly, peddlers in Seoul and suburbs were increased, and the control of government and capitalists over them were more reinforced. Also the bases of peddlers were expanded to the places around parks, theaters, plazas, etc.
After the Japanese imperialists occupied Korea, the Japanese rulers have treated the subjects about urban peddlers as one of sanitation or security problems. They have excercised powers on the urban peddlers in Seoul unlimittedly. Vegetablemen, fish dealers, water dealers, Secondhand dealers were punished by police for no particular reason. As the result, peoples images about the urban peddlers have grown worse, and the social status of them have depriciated.
