In the past two years (2009~2010), on the one hand, Korean scholars who specialized in historical theory and the intellectual history of the West made great progress in terms of both the quantity and quality of their research. They published a number of constructive and provocative papers and contributed to such progress. On the other hand, there are still some problems that remain unsolved. Most of the 120 papers and monographs published in the past two years followed the old pattern of research in the Korean academic society of Western history; they tended to merely introduce the research of western scholars by simply rewriting them in their own Korean languages. There were few papers that developed their own theories and employed new methodologies. They lack interdisciplinary perspectives and approaches with some exceptional papers produced by Humanities Korea, the government-sponsored research groups, each of which are composed of six to twenty scholars from the various fields of humanities. Korean scholars need to search for new methodologies, expand the variety of research topics, and utilize more new resources with more eagerness. They should also contribute to historical writing for general readers as well as specialists. In the past two years, nonetheless, Korean scholars of historical theory and Western intellectual history seem to have made significant preparations for progress to come.
