Pocock"s magnum opus, The Machiavellian Moment: Florentine Political Thought and the Atlantic Republican Tradition, has been read as the book which provides a new interpretation of American political thought during the founding era; that is a republican interpretation on behalf of the Lockean Proviso. But as the subtitle of his book shows, Pocock"s book is about the republicanism, especially machiavellian republicanism.
This machiavellian republicanism focuses on the aristotelian tradition based on the concept of positive liberty. The governo largo, civic militia and virtu play the crucial roles in his work, as Pocock searches for republican ideals in England and America. As Pocock recognized, Machiavelli emphasized one aspect of republicanism, the Aristotelian tradition of liberty. But another tradition also exists in republican thought: the Roman which stresses justice and law.
As publicity, fairness and justice have become the conversation topics in Korean society. Pocock"s book focusing on the politics of liberty can provide fresh insights in which these concerns may be addressed.
