The rapid unethical globalization led by the West has made it hard to preserve or discard the idea of nation, prompting a controversial debate over nationalism. In order to overcome the limitation of introverted nationalism, not from a Western viewpoint, but from an Asian (Korean) one, I will discuss two Korean thoughts: Donghak (Eastern Learning) and Ssial (multitude). The former accepted Christian ideas on the basis of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism, whereas the latter was afliated with the former. In these two thoughts, I will nd a cultural nationalism that contains universal human values, with “cultural” referring to the religious ethos that has melted down into a nation over a long period. In so doing, I suggest a role a nation can play as an alternative to globalization.
