This principal objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship between the career barrier and employment preparation behavior of college students who major in secretarial science. Based on the results of studies related to college students’ career barriers as a independence variable and to job search self-esteem as a parameter, the influence of these factors on college students’ employment preparation behavior are analyzed.
To achieve the objective of this research, data was collected from convenient samples of 144 college students majoring in secretarial science in Seoul and Kyunggido. All data analysis was carried out using the SPSS 12.0 statistics package.
The results are as follows: first, the career barriers of college students majoring in secretarial science exerted a partial effect on the employment preparation behavior. Second, personality barriers and anxiety regarding the future environment negatively affect employment preparation behavior. Financial hardship and lack of career information positively affect employment preparation behavior. Third, groups with high pb search self-esteem had relatively high levels of employment preparation behavior. Fourth, job search self-esteem was found to mediate the relationship between career barriers and employment preparation behavior.
These results can help job consuiting practitioners understand the entire set of developmental features and formulate new counselling services, taking into consideration the significant differences in employment preparation behavior according to psychological differences.
