Biogas can be obtained from biogenic materials through an anaerobic digestion process. Since biogas has lower calorific value than conventional gas fuels because of its inert gas components, and the composition of biogas varies depending upon the origin of the anaerobic digestion process, appropriate combustion strategies need to be established to maintain stable combustion when it applies to engine applications. In this study, efforts have been made to investigate characteristics of engine performance and emissions depending on variation of inert gas composition in biogas. Experiment has been carried out with a simulated biogas to the SI engine. The fractions of CO₂ and N₂ in the simulated biogas were changed from 0 to 60% by volume respectively. Experimental results show that the MBT spark timing was advanced as the fraction of inert gases in the biogas increased. In addition, increasing inert gas compositions in the biogas can reduce the NOx emissions. Moreover, NOx emission drop in CO₂ case was more significant than that of N₂ because of higher heat capacity of CO₂, while THC emissions showed opposite tendency. Thermal efficiency was slightly increased in N₂ case with elevation of N₂ content in biogas due to the decreased heat loss and PMEP. However, there is no difference in CO₂ case because deteriorated flame propagation speed countervails the above mentioned thermal efficiency increasing factors.
