Various collective housing complexes that have been developed domestically led to a continuous interest in outdoor space vitalization followed by the improvement of pedestrian environments within the complexes and to the introduction of community streets with the concept of a traditional community to construction design. This study was aimed to analyze the importance of planning community streets and the implications of planning for the vitalization of the exterior spaces in the complexes. The study analyzed the characteristics of their planning and application aspects in six complexes planned as of 2,000s.
The results of the study drawn from the analysis were as below. First, as the spaces for people’s daily lives, community streets had to be linked to environments and it was necessary to make clear the characteristics of a space clear, by making overlapping and semi-private spaces. Second, community streets could give rise to the vitalization of a community through the complexation of apartment housing with commercial, welfare and public facilities along the roadsides for the purpose of forming such a community. Third, community streets could provide the pleasure and convenience of street walking, by combining the exterior space of a complex with a city for street vitalization. Community streets could also be planned due to the commercial strips or the complexation of shopping areas in the lower level apartments and the width would also be an important factor. Therefore, depending on the characteristics of the complexes, the width, direction and nature of roads and the width of sidewalks should be varied. Fourth, it would be important to consider the urban scape. In the same context as urban streets, the pleasure of walking in community streets would be better in terms of landscape as well as convenience. Besides, community streets have demonstrated wide aspects of planning through various planning factors, thus creating the necessity of continuous research on them.
