The term ‘big covering stone (Dashigai) tomb" was first presented by Xuminggang and Xuyulin in 1980 as they were reporting on the Shuangfang site in Pulandian city, as dolmen number 6 of Shuangfang was different from dolmen burial practices they presented the term ‘covering stone tomb’ and in 1981 after modification they presented the new term lbig covering stone tomb’. These big covering stone tomb theories were based on the recognition that the absolute attribute of dolmen tombs is the ‘supporting stone’ and that the type site of these burial practices are tomb number 6 of Shuangfang in Pulandian city and tombs in the Qiaotun site. However, considering that the ‘capstone’ is the more fundamental attribute of dolmen tombs and that tomb number 6 of Shaungfang is categorized as covering stone dolmen, it seems the ‘big covering stone tomb theory’ of Xuminggang and Xuyulin was incorrectly raised, based on a misunderstanding of dolmen burial practices.
In addition, in the area from the middle and upper reaches of the Dongliaohe river to the upper reaches of the Huifahe river in southern Jilin province are distributed tombs of a peculiar structure having a large-scale covering capstone, and have a common characteristic of having one large-scale covering capstone and a deep, wide rectangular burial chamber. Therefore, although this is a term raised by Xuminggang and Xuyulin based on a misunderstanding of burial practices, I propose to raise this as a new academic concept and to call this a ‘big covering stone tomb’. In many respects, the big covering stone tombs of this area seem to be a new burial practice which emerged in the 4th-3rd century B.C., as a result of the combination of dolmen burial practices of the southern Jilin area and local stone coffin tomb burial practices.
