Redundancy in negation has been widely attested in natural language. Many in compositional semantics tradition have regarded this as posing a particular challenge to a semantic theory because one or more negative markers are interpreted vacuously without making polarity contributions. After examining various types of redundancy in negation mostly in English and Korean, we propose a thesis that (i) the redundant (or expletive) negation is essentially the same in nature as the redundancy in lexical and grammatical categories that is found in words such as ATM machine and past experience and also that (ii) these devices of redundancy are motivated as attempts to counter the cognitive constraints of information encapsulation imposed upon inter-categorical information processing in natural language.
