Recently steel makers are developing a variety of new sheet steel like UHSS(Ultra High Strength Steel) and new coated steel for the weight reduction, performance enhancement and corrosion resistance of automotive. For automotive application, the new development sheet steel must be good enough to satisfy the requirement of weldability and paintability. Firstly weldability should be confirmed, because new developed UHSS contains several alloying element. These alloying elements make weldability of material worse generally. So car makers have their own welding requirement, verify whether the material is acceptable or not, by conducting several test like weld lobe, weld endurance test. Paintability is related to the coating type and surface quality. So the new developed steel should be confirmed by the phosphate and paint compatibility test.Besides these tests, there are a lot of test processes like adhesive compatibility test.
Before new developed steel is applied to the automotive, the material should meet the car maker’s requirement through the above test process. And the test items and results in this paper would be a guide for new sheet steel development
