This paper aims to trace where the border between Goguryeo and Shilla was in the 5th and 6th centuries, and to examine the structure of the border area between these two ancient kingdoms. The border between Goguryeo and Shilla changed distinctively, over three time periods.
⑴ The 1st Stage (~450AD)
The border between the two kingdoms was formed when King Gwang’gaeto-wang of Goguryeo occupied the Bukhan-gang River basin of Baekje and rescued Shilla from the attack of the Japanese pirates in the early 5th century. Then, the Goguryeo troops used the Juk-ryeong(Ridge) route. The north side of the ridge, the upper Nam’han-gang River basin and the Bukhan-gang River basin outlined the Goguryeo territory. However, the frontier base of Goguryeo was located in the Bukhan-gang River basin. The upper Nam’han-gang River basin was a buffer zone where the ethnic group called “Ye” resided.
⑵ The 2nd Stage (451~550)
Shilla, which had been dependent on Goguryeo, started to fight it instead in the mid-5th century. In response, Goguryeo attacked the east coast of Shilla through the branch line of the Juk-ryeong(Ridge) route. After the fall of Hanseong, the capital of Baekje, Goguryeo attacked the Chungju area located in the middle area of the Nam’han-gang River basin.
It is believed that there was a peace treaty between them at the time, as apparently there was no combat in the early half of the 6th century. A peace treaty was accompanied by the establishment of borders. This time, the Gye’rim-ryeong(Ridge) route was used, and Chungju functioned as the gate of Goguryeo. Shilla began to rule the upper Nam’han-gang River basin.
⑶ The 3rd Stage (551~)
Shilla advanced into the lower Han-gang River basin in the mid 6th century. The border between Goguryeo and Shilla was also decided by sort of a treaty. The line seems to have been drawn from the Bukhan-san Mountain where the ’Monument of Bukhan-san’ was erected, to the point where the Imjin-gang and Han-gang Rivers part ways. Shilla occupied the South side of the Bukhan-san Mountain. However, Goguryeo’s frontier base and main gate was Horogoru(Fortress), located on the north shore of the Imjin-gang River. Horogoru and the Yangju Sanseong Fortress(Shilla’s frontier base) were connected by a traffic route, and the rest of the area between them served as a buffer zone.
