This study reconsiders the effects of L1 transfer on English L2 overpassivization errors (non-targetlike passivization of unaccusative verbs, a subclass of intransitives). The study focuses particularly on non-alternating unaccusatives. Previous studies, such as No & Chung (2006) and Chung (2009), investigated whether L1 morphological properties affected overpassivization errors by Korean learners of English. Their hypothesis was that overpassivization errors occur more often with [+ci] type verbs (i.e., verbs whose Korean translation counterparts contain one of the Korean passive morphemes ci) than with [-ci] type verbs. The present paper aims at providing further conceptual and empirical support for this hypothesis. On the conceptual side, the verb form salacita (the Korean translation counterpart of disappear or vanish) is to be analyzed as a passive expression on a par with canonical -e/a ci-ta constructions. On the empirical side, an experiment was conducted employing a translation task, which required the subjects to translate the Korean sentence into English using the English unaccusative verb provided. The results indicate that more overpassivization errors occurred with [+ci] type verbs (fall, disappear, vanish) than with [-ci] type verbs (appear, emerge, thrive). Although the difference between the two types of verbs was statistically significant, only 13 out of 20 subjects regarded ttelecita (the Korean translation counterpart of fall) as a passive expression, and just 7 out of 20 subjects considered salacita (the Korean translation counterpart of disappear or vanish) to be a passive expression. Thus, the hypothesis has only been partially confirmed. Pedagogical implications of these findings are discussed.
