Negative polarity items(NPI) are permitted only in special conditions and this distributional constraint has high similarity between languages. In this respect, a number of researchers have focused on elucidating NPI-licensing contexts. However, the present study brings out a question in relation to the research method of focusing on the licensing contexts only without investigating what NPI are, and regards am issue of their distributional constraint as a question that should be elucidated in a correlation with semantic and pragmatic characteristics of the NPI in themselves.
The current study understands a phenomenon of NPI of language as a pragmatic phenomenon which is sensitive to inferential characteristics of the context rather than a purely logical-semantic phenomenon, and believes that the concept of pragmatic scale plays a key role especially in a correlation between contextual conditions licensing the NPI and their semantic and pragmatic characteristics. We are to pay attention to the fact that the NPI don"t have passive properties which appear only in licensable conditions, but have active properties as scale triggers to provide a context with the nature of scale as they appear. In this sense, it can be defined that as the NPI trigger a scale of pragmatic likelihood, and point out the end point on the scale, they are items which form the starting point of downward inference. Like this, the NPI mention only one point of the scale and come to perform a function to strengthen utterance by making one infer the whole set associated.
These semantic and pragmatic characteristics of the NPI are found in Russian NPI, ‘kНИ-pronoun’and ‘lЛИБО-pronoun’as well. They are typical types that indefinite pronouns have come to perform functions of the NPI and as both of them point out the highest point of the pragmatic scale, they function as a starting point of downward inference. In particular, the current paper intends to pay attention to their functions related to the NPI opposing a view prevalent in the academic world of Russian language to simply regard ‘kЛИБО-pronoun’as a variation of style of ‘lНИБУДЬ-pronoun’ Semantic functions of ‘kЛИБО-pronoun’as one of the NPI are not different from those of ‘lНИ-pronoun’ but while ‘kНИ-pronoun’has only functions of the NPI, ‘lЛИБО-pronoun’has functions of simple indefinite pronouns as well as those of the NPI, which suggests differences between them. In addition, they have differences in the distributional aspect as well: If ‘kНИ-pronoun’has stronger morphologic and syntactic constraints called clausemate sentential negation, ‘lЛИБО-pronoun is permitted in the context of other downward entailments except clausemate sentential negation, and by this both constitute the relation of complementary distribution of somewhat loosened nature(which indicates a small number of situations which may appear concurrently).
