The purpose of this paper is specifically to examine the change pattern of ‘X(:)+Y:→ X(:)+Y’ and investigate how simple words’ vowel lengths are reflected in compound words, focusing on some of head words from the Kuen Dictionary as samples. This paper reveals new findings as follows. 1) Examination on vowel length patterns of compound words selected from the Kuen Dictionary indicates that the change pattern of ‘X(:)+Y:→X(:)+Y’ has appeared since the early 20th century. 2) In the formation of X(:)+Y(:), the rate of how much of a following root Y’s sound length is retained is higher in inflected compound words(85.3%~92.4%) than in nominal compound words(29.3%~64.3%). 3) How much of nominal compound words’ sound lengths are retained varies depending on types of following roots Y. 4) Even though the ‘X(:)+Y:’ form is theoretically supposed to be realized as two accentual phases like (X:)p(Y:)p, it can also be realized as (X:Y)p due to the influence of other factors such as speech rates and speech environment.
