In naturally occurring conversation, while one participant is engaged in talking, other participants are not just listening but are also providing some kind of feedback to the speaker. This phenomenon is known as the Reactive Token (RT), a short utterance produced by a listener during another interlocutor’s speakership.
This paper analyzed the RT functions and characteristics of dui. Through a systematic corpus?based analysis, I have shown that dui, originally used only as the main verb of a clause is now employed by listeners as an RT.
I have found that when dui is used as a reactive token it occurs most frequently in the beginning position of a turn. My analysis indicated that the word most frequently co?occurring with dui is dui. I also revealed that many cases of dui are recurrently preceded by an interjection, although there are other forms that have similar semantic meaning to dui, dui has more discourse?pragmatic functions than these other response expressions do.
