Second language (L2) acquisition in adult’s production is known to differ from first language (L1) production in various ways. The non-native accents in L2 are arguably the most instantly noticeable cues that distinguish non-native speakers’ speech from that of native speakers. The phonological and phonetic interference from the speaker’s L1 sound system is often claimed to be responsible for the non-native accents produced in L2. While the interference occurs at both segmental and prosodic levels, much attention has centered on the phonological and phonetic transfer of segmental features of L1. The present study aims at understanding the phonetic and phonological interference of prosodic features of L1 in L2 acquisition by examining the intonational structures of Mandarin Chinese produced by Seoul Korean speakers. An acoustic experiment was conducted using the utterances produced by three native speakers of Mandarin Chinese and six intermediate-level Seoul Korean speakers. The target utterances were designed to investigate the realization of yes-no question intonation patterns with differing tonal combinations towards utterance-final position to observe the tonal and intonational interference. The experimental results of the study show that the interference of a high phrase boundary tone takes place in a certain phonological context, which results in a phonological similarity to the dominant phrase tonal sequence in L1. This finding reveals that the patterns of intonational transfer can be explained in terms of the phonological status of a relevant prosodic feature in L2 as well as L1, and therefore suggests that a prosodic transfer is not a direct carryover of L1 features but does involve a phonological mechanism that interprets relevant L1 features within a L2 context.
