This research is meant to shed light upon the theme of Paul"s collection for the poor in Jerusalem, and to lay bare its theological meanings through making a careful examination of pertinent biblical texts. Not a few Pauline texts that have to do with Paul’"s fund-raising indicate that it was one of his major apostolic ministries. Being committed to the project for a long time, he had to encounter countless difficulties in the meantime. Not a less evidence in his letters denotes that Paul himself asked his gentile churches to participate in the fund-raising. It officially started from the time of the “"Jerusalem meeting”" reported in Galatians 2 by the request of Cephas. Yet, the dispute between the two churches that arose ensuing the “"Antioch incident”" in Galatians 2:11-14, brought the project to a pause for a while. Although it did not take a long time for the collection to be resumed, it at once encountered an obstacle formed by interference by his opponents in Corinth and misunderstanding of his church members there.
This research proposes that Paul’"s collection has three different theological aspects. First of all, it purports to be a relief fund for the poor in Jerusalem church. Secondly, it was expected to reconcile the two ethnically distinctive, potentially separated, churches to unite in Christ. Lastly, it seems that in Paul"s reasoning, favorable acceptance of the fund by the Jerusalem church leaders would eventually lead to acknowledgement of the legitimacy of Paul’"s apostleship and his gentile churches. The theological meanings of Paul’"s collection give challenges to Korean churches, which include sharing possession as a sign of God’"s grace, staying in unity in spite of rigid denominational border lines, and playing a role as an agent of Christ and a prophetic voice as well.
