Modern self, while internalizing the value systems of the modernity, is basically optimistic. It draws confidence from the mood of the Enlightenment when scientific method appeared to open up new possibilities for the self and society. It is active and self-sufficient agent that is wide open to its own future.
The postmodern self, however, no longer regards itself as active agent carving out any possibility with the aid of natural and social sciences. It regards itself as an opaque product of variable roles and performances which have been imposed upon it by the society and by its own inner drives or conflicts. Furthermore, it considers claims to truth as disguised attempts to legitimate uses of power. It dissolves truth into the conventions or power-interests of different or competing communities. Thus it has no confidence that it can have genuine self identity and true relationship in society.
In fact certain forms of religions, even within Christian traditions, are instrumental devices to control and manipulate others. The Bible is aware that human identity and relations are continually under illegitimate control and manipulation. Yet it also affirms the possibility of genuine human identity and relations in the story of God. The Scripture proclaims that in the triune God who dwells as the divine community of love and friendship that is open wide to the whole creation, genuine human identity and relationships can be found. Since the symbol of God functions for humanity as the ultimate point of reference for understanding experience, life, and the world, it can function as the theological foundation for the genuine human identity and relationships that the postmodern self desperately wants to get.
