The early life of historical Jesus is associated with John the Baptist and his movement. However, it is difficult to research historical John because materials are limited. John the Baptist appeared in Josephus, synoptic Gospels, the Gospel of John, the Gospel of Thomas. Moreover, these documents are infiltrated with Christian interpretations.
Q Gospel is the oldest and the most important material about John the Baptist. This paper is a study on the Baptist tradition in Q Gospel. According to Q Gospel, John the Baptist was a popular prophet who lived in the desert. Also, he was a itinerant prophet wandering around Jordan region. Desert was a place of resistance movements. There were people(min-jung) around John the Baptist.
these min-jung became members of Baptist community and Q community. Baptist movement and Jesus movement were min-jung movement.
Q 7:24-28 is the oldest layer of Baptist traditions. In this layer, John is conflict with Herod Antipas. In this layer, Jesus respected John the Baptist as the greatest man. Jesus movement is subordinated to Baptist community in this stage. But two communities fell into conflict situation instantly. John’s disciple doubted Jesus and Q community warned Baptist movement. In the last stage, two communities is in solidarity with each other.
In Q Gospel, John the Baptist and Jesus the son of man lived painfully. They always experienced oppositions and persecutions. But these oppositions and persecutions give us infinite comfort and courage.
