The purposes of this paper is to establish the links between the basic meaning of connective ‘-eso’ in Korean and its various abstract uses based on Cognitive Linguistics. In chapter 1 the aim and the scope of this paper will be presented. In chapter 2 ‘motivation’ and ‘pragmatic inference’ will be defined as the framework of this paper. In chapter 3, 4 will be described the meaning and analyzed the process of the meaning extension of connective ‘-eso’ through pragmatic inference; [sequential], [coextensive], [means], [reason], [purpose], [situation].
This study will be meaningful in that it discusses the type of abstract extensions of connective ‘-eso’ is not random but systematically based on its implicative meaning derived from structure of the correlative event. Furthermore it will be meaningful in that a systematic organization of connective ‘-eso’ will provide the nature of the meaning function of connective ‘-eso’ and an effective tool for exploring the meaning structure of other connectives.
