Samguk-Yusa is one of the most important books on the ancient history of Korea. It bears some historical records derived from various inscriptions. They were originally incised in monks" monuments, Buddhist statues and bronze bells. Il-yeon(一然), the author of Samguk-Yusa cited them very deliberately. So we can trace some characteristics of the historical records in Samguk-Yusa by comparing its texts with the original inscriptions.
In this paper, I chose two inscriptions as the samples and tried to analyze how and how much they were cited in Samguk-Yusa. The two samples are a stone statue of Maitreya(彌勒) and one of Amitabha(阿彌 陀), both of which were displayed at Gamsan-sa Temple in Gyeongju. Il-yeon cut off much potion from the original inscriptions and made us slightly misunderstand the contents. But the main ideas on the inscriptions are delivered so well that we can rely on the texts of Samguk-Yusa as a whole.
And in the course of survey, I found an interesting thing. It is that Samguk-Yusa does not tell any story on the Zen Buddhism(禪宗) and its monks. It is very curious in that lots of monuments for Zen monks existed at the time of writing Samguk-Yusa. And furthermore Il-yeon himself was a Zen monk. There have been some opinions towards searching for an adequate answer on the question. They have some reasoning power but defects as well. I suggested a new idea that Il-yeon looked down on his predecessors who had shown an unfriendly attitude towards the non-Zen Buddhism. It was the very reason that he did not deal with a history of the Zen Buddhism and its monks in his own history book, Samguk-Yusa.
