This study is centering on the history and academic researches of Korean semantics, and the purpose of this study is to present some future tasks through examining the trend of semantics researches.
Semantics began with lexical semantics in the late 1950s and this kind of research was expanded gradually by a certain process of ‘word → sentence → utterance’. So it is necessary to do complementary research among these three fields - word, sentence and utterance. The study will examine the development process of subdivisions of these fields respectively as below.
Firstly, Korean lexical semantics researching on the meanings of words has mainly studied semantic analysis (polysemous analysis, componential analysis)of individual word and semantic relation among the words (synonym, antonym, hyponym).
Secondly, the analysis of ambiguous meanings and function words (postpositions and endings of words) in the sentences which are studied by agreement and modification and negative range has been achieved on the background of Korean syntax. On the other hand, presuppositions and entailments among sentences were studied in the formal semantics.
Thirdly, Korean speech-act semantics, which was built on the generative semantics of the 1970s and on the theory of speech act of the 1980s, has studied contexts between speakers and listeners, speech act, anaphor, honorifics, dicourse analysis and so on. Moreover, such complementary researches among the three fields - word, sentence and utterance have to be done and they will be achieved on diversified views by making good use of the other field in linguistics, or research methods or research results of related studies.
