Kiswahili verbal extension system is well known for its difficulties of representation. Its 10 different kinds of gramms with their varieties of functions. Traditionally it has been described as derivational suffixes, but there are other functions like reduplication, reflexive and fossilized inceptive. Conversive can be treated as autonomous root with its lexical meaning. So compounding and inflection are included in the system of verbal extension.
Kiswahili verbal complex is composed of 10 different kinds of units with their grammatical functions in strict linear order. Our extension form locates in 8th position in general, but again this position allows 8 extension forms to come. We investigate how these forms are arranged together according to their grammatical status and function. It depends on the degree of grammaticality on the scale of lexeme-to-inflection axises.
It is argued that the peculiarity of verbal extension system in its distribution and grammatical functions can be best explained in terms of grammatical asymmetry and iconicity which are regarded as basic and useful concepts for understanding grammatical structure in general(Haiman 1980, 1983, Givon 1985, 1994, Lehmann 2003, Haspelmath 2008). This topic goes back to the basic inquiry about the language as sign system. In this paper we introduced some basic approach with their core concepts about semiosis, namely Peirce" three different patterns of symbol, and Buhler"s three different components of communication. What is relevant to our discussion is most of all the concept of motivation, especially iconicity which is based upon the similarity between the sign and the referent or designatum on the one hand, and the one between significans and significatum in other. Grammatical function is mainly the matter of language-internal relation between form and content of the given sign. Thus this article tried to show how the grammatical arrangement and its functions of Kiswahili verbal extensions are located in its overall given position. We tried to represent it as a diagrammatic image to show the given iconicity of the structure, but with some asymmetry.
