Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether NIOSH Lifting Guidelines are applicable to Korean population without any modification such as racial differences.
Method: 380 lifting tasks which performed in actual worksite were analyzed with NIOSH Lifting Guideline. Among them the 10 lifting tasks which include various working conditions such as frequency, lifting positions, distances and weight were selected as representing tasks for experimental session. Total of 40 paid subjects (20 men and women, aged 20 - 50yeears) participated in the experiment. While subject performing pre-selected 10 typical tasks, physiological, biomechanical, and psychological responses were measured.
Results: The result of Physiological approach showed that 55.7% of lifting tasks which were estimated as LI≥1(risky job) were considered safe job for Korean populations. Whereas, Biomechanical approach even revealed 91.6% of risky job were considered as safe. This result indicated that the risk of low back pain could be under estimated if existed NLE is applied to Korean population without proper modification of NLE.
Conclusion: Based upon the experiments, for safety of workers in Korean industry it is concluded that NIOSH Lifting Guideline should not apply directly to Korean working population without consideration of proper modification such as racial difference.
