This study examines the perception of reality exposed throughout the poems of Hyeon-seung Kim in three periods, Japanese colonial era, the Korean War, and April 19 Revolution. As it is generally known, Kim established the world of his poems based on moral conscience by internalizing the Christian world view, and he is considered as the poet who embodied the solitude that one feels as a person. However, he did not neglect perceiving the reality in social and historical aspects along with this internal pursuit.
In the beginning of the 1930"s, he embodied the tragic circumstance of the nation under Japanese rule through natural objects and showed the trend of national romanticism which combines national sentiment and natural lyricism. In particular, he intensified the perception of reality through the juxtaposition of contrasting images and expressed the aspiration for the ideal world.
During the Korean War, he embodied the cruelty and impersonality of war through negative images. He also probed the anti-civilization consciousness involved in the war, trying to realize humanity by overcoming such negative phenomena and the inversion of values with love.
After experiencing the April 19 Revolution, Kim unmasked and vociferously criticized the social injustices and absurdities. He gave serious consideration to participatory literature and emphasized that the true participatory literature is to uplift the value of human life. This is also connected with the humanist idea which forms the basis of his poetic consciousness. Kim sharpens the blade of consciousness in order not to compromise with the reality that is ruled by oppression and power.
This study focused on the aspect of perceiving reality in the poems of Hyeon-seung Kim unlike preceeding studies which lopsidedly focused on his religious aspect and internal aspect. His perception of reality ultimately focuses on the affection toward people and the realization of justice, and in order to realize such, he established a solid world of consciousness. Kim is the poet of catholicism, absolute solitude, and consciousness based on the perception of reality, and that is the conclusion of this study.
