The psalmist used various expressions to modify or denote God. This study starts from the viewpoint that these expressions need to be understood as God’s epithets rather than metaphors. To demonstrate the point, this study tries to 1) point out errors of earlier translations in psalm 62:7, 2) propose a new translation that interpret ????? as a vocative, 3) explain what ????? as God"s epithet means, and 4) examine what advantages psalmist has from calling God ?????.
Most of English version and Korean version Bibles translate psalm 62:7 free according to translator’s subjectivity rather than true to the original. They used to presume ellipsis or disregard punctuation mark (’Atnah). It seems that they thought amending the original could be possible in the case of poem. But this study tries to translate true to the original the best without amending and presuming. The core of this translation is how to translate ?????. This word remains alone in a sentence, because it is divided from the first half clause by ’Atnah and the rest of the second half in a content. Earlier translations translated psalm 62:7 as a noun sentence presuming ellipsis and correction, but this study proposes translating ????? as a vocative and understanding it as God’s epithet.
An epithet means a word or phrase indicating some quality, attribute, or a role which the speaker or writer regards as characteristic of the person or thing described, and it includes both adjectives and nouns. When employed as a vocative, this can show a synergy effect. An epithet includes the speaker’s understanding, emotion, evaluation about the person or thing described, and a vocative has a function to appoint, call out the listener and induce him/her to join the speaker’s talk. Calling God specific epithet is same as demanding and urging to do the way that the speaker understands, expects, and requests.
Psalm 62’s speaker might be a person in distress from enemies. By calling God ?????, he/she manifested one’s need being a refuge to escape enemies, and demanded with confidence that God would save him/her from enemies and give a victory.
