The women"s movement of the United States of America was encouraged under the influence of the political and social atmosphere of the 1960s, such as the civil rights movement, student"s movement, and the anti-war movement. Radical Theatre Movement, as well as the Women"s Movement made a big contribution to the birth of the feminist drama. Women thought that the public and social elements of the theatre can be a good menas to express feminist issues to the audience.
The feminist drama which has been established as a theatrical genre in the late 1960s explores various problems that haven"t been dealt with in the present male-dominated theatre such as the experiences of women, women"s role in a society, and the relationship between women themselves.
In feminist drama, women try to escape from her subordinate status to search for her identity in the patriarchal society. Their purpose is to make the women audiences sympathize with the drama and to make them see reality. Feminist theatre also rebels against the male-oriented management of the existing theatre itself by giving many opportunities to women artists to participate in creating a play.
Although Susan Glaspell"s Trifles had been ignored until 1970s, it is now considered to have marked the beginning of the feminist plays. In Trifles, the tragic life of Minnie, a heroine who was living a suppressed life and who murdered her husband, is newly spotlighted and given a new meaning through neighboring women"s investigations and descriptions of her life. During the investigation, Minnie"s suffocated life is gradually revealed. These neighboring women"s sympathy toward Minnie is an indicator of women"s common realization that changes are desperately needed in the familial and social life.
In this play shows that women play struggle to build up their independent identity in the patriarchal society. Most women are oppressed by male-characters and community ideology. Susan emphasizes female solidarity because relations among women make women achieve the autonomous subject position.
