The purpose of the present study is to investigate the feasibility of a way of teaching English reading using pausal units, which are used as a tool for English reading assessment. To achieve this purpose, the present study implemented one-semester long English reading class using pausal units and reading aloud method to examine its effects on the development of English reading abilities. The results of cloze test, reading speed test, and recall test, which were conducted before and after the course, indicate that teaching of English reading with pausal units and reading aloud was effective in terms of the development of English reading abilities. In addition, the analysis of the course evaluation questionnaire shows that the students who participated in the present study were satisfied with the teaching method. The results of the present study indicate that the practices of reading pausal units aloud can be effectively implemented in a formal English reading classroom.
