This study reviews the results of research on classical literature which have been included in The Korean Language and Literature, an academic journal issued by The Society of Korean Language and Literature to celebrate its 60th anniversary. Firstly, the literatures have been divided into the first period(1952-1970), the second period(1971-1990) and the third period(1991-2011) by twenty years. Then the tendency of research on different genres including general theory, classical poetry, classical narrative, classical prose, sino-korean literature, oral literature and folklore.
This review shows the following results.
Firstly, there have been more of studies carried out during the second period, compared to the first period, but the number of papers has decreased during the third period. It seems that this is because academic societies have been divided according to different genres variously and the results of their research have also been divided differently as there have been more of academic journals during the third period. However, there have been continuous research on Hyang-ga, Chinese poem, Pansori, thus having increased the number of their studies.
Secondly, there have been studies which have not been relatively vitalized. In general, however, entire parts of the classical literature have been studied in depth continuously.
Thirdly, further studies need to be directed to enhance the status of Korean classical literature in East Asia and the entire world, to deepen connection to related studies, to find the ways to utilize the literature educationally and culturally, and finally the research in this field needs to be carried out more widely.
