〈Yang Ki Son Jeon〉 is the novel bringing a fresh perspective and solution on wives, concubine and stepmother considered conflict factors in family novels. So far, 〈Yang Ki Son Jeon〉 of Seoul National University is regarded as the only thing and has been studied on it generally and fragmentarily. Since then, it is verified that different versions of 〈Yang Ki Son Jeon〉 exist but there has been no research on them.
The different editions of 〈Yang Ki Son Jeon〉 of which we can identify the content are four books - one version of Seoul National University and three of Yonsei University. The contents of Yonsei University’s version are excessively curtailed compared to the other ones. They are shown to be deliberately omitted and lessened by the writers and have the most distinctive thing like the ending of the stories with all characters dying or insane. The C version of Yonsei University has same story with the A version of Yonsei University and the edition of Seoul National University but it is partly distinguished from them in terms of vocabulary, sentence structure and the purpose of transcript recorded on the ending.
The fact that 〈Yang Ki Son Jeon〉 has the manuscript written in Korean with it’s different version at the same time does not mean that it was not read at all, but it seems not to have been popular in that it couldn’t be in print or published. As it became into the late of Chosun Dynasty, the function of pleasure in novels was regarded more importantly than that of moral or lesson. Meanwhile, 〈Yang Ki Son Jeon〉 has historical significance of novel in Korea since it contains distinct individuality of the writer’s own beyond category of popularization and stereotype.
