To examine the flowering, reproductive growth, and developmental processes of fruits and seeds of Dendropanax morbifera Lev., sample trees were selected at four different sites with different altitudes. The flowering period, amount of flowering, and number of fruits and seeds produced by the trees were investigated. Fruit and seed specimens were collected at 1-week intervals, and the diameter growth, water content, and protein content were measured. The flowering period consisted of 22 days (from August 18 to September 10, 2006) and peak flowering occurred on August 21. This flowering period started a week later than that in 2005. The number of flower buds, diameter at breast height (DBH), age, and width of the crown of the sample trees were found to be significantly correlated with one another. The seed setting rate was 83% in relation to the number of flower buds, and the proportion of mature seeds was 63%. Seeds matured 10 weeks after pollination. Our investigation performed at 1-week intervals starting on September 5, when specimen collection and analysis were possible, showed that the fruit maturation process could be classified into three phases. In phase 1 during which the seed and fruit growth increase drastically up to 5 weeks after pollination, the fresh and dry weights of the seeds and fruit drastically increased but water content did not change. During phase 2, the period including post-pollination weeks 6 to 9, the both diameter and fresh weight increased slowly, the diameter growth of the seed ceased, the water content decreased, and the dry weight and protein content increase. Finally, the seed reaches maturation during phase 3, the period after post-pollination week 9. During this phase, the fresh and dry weights of the fruit decrease. In contrast, the fresh and dry weights and water content of the seeds did not change, and the highest protein content was observed. In addition, the color of the fruit became dark red and broadcast planting occurred.
