This study aims to investigate students" satisfaction and attitude towards the level-based English reading class. Furthermore, this paper also tries to develop a proficiency-based general English curriculum for effective general English education. At this stage of this research, the pedagogical implications are directed at each level of the class.
The participants in this study were a total of 121 university freshmen taking English 1 as part of their foreign language requirement. A questionnaire survey was administered to the students to research their perceptions of the level-based program. For a level-based class, students are divided into three groups - advanced class, intermediate class, and beginner class - based on the score of the placement test. In addition to preparing and executing the placement test, the main procedures for a level-based class include meeting with curriculum committee members, grouping classes, preparing grading policy, and selecting the textbooks. Each procedure was set up to improve the quality of English reading classes and students" English ability.
The findings of this study are as follows:
First, the survey showed that students have positive attitude to their belonging group based on their proficiency. Second, most students strongly approved of the need for the level-based curriculum and wanted to continue studying in the level-based class. The higher need was shown in the advanced-level students and in more thirties or forties. Third, the English level-based class will have a good effect on students" learning although the students with beginner-level ability should be given the support inspiring their satisfaction and achievement. Finally, there were significant differences in English reading strategies among three levels of groups.
Some pedagogical implications based on the findings were discussed on how to improve the efficiency of the program not only on administrative level but also in a pedagogical aspect.
