Countless families were ‘broken’ between the south and north of the Korean peninsula as a result of the division following the Korean war. Most of these incidents could be categorized as ‘a Diaspora by Division,’ that occurred during the Korean war. Yet even before the war broke out, many people had already crossed the 38 parallel since the liberation in 1945. Even after the war various forms of ‘cross-over’ have continued to the present.
People who ‘crossed over’ after the liberation and before the war mostly chose to do so voluntarily. Yet after the division following the truce, such crossovers became permanent separations and divisions between people. Regarding the separations that occurred during wartime in particular, the South and North Korean governments fiercely differed in their opinions concerning the issue of whether to recognize these crossovers as ‘voluntary’ or ‘forced.’ These people, stuck in tremendously unfortunate situations, are products of the cease-fire state which is based upon the hostile standoff that has continued for over half a century between South and North Koreas.
